Yuriyan Retriever couldn’t be accused of resting on her laurels. Having proved her acting chops in the Netflix series “The Queen of Villains,” the comedian is currently trying to make it on the U.S. stand-up scene and establish herself as a rapper.

Now Yuriyan (real name Yuri Yoshida) has added movie director to her list of credentials. “Mag Mag” — which she made shortly before relocating to Los Angeles in 2024 — doesn’t quite live up to her stated ambition to become the next Clint Eastwood, but it doesn’t smack of mere dilettantism either.

Her debut feature is the first release from K2 Pictures, a production company launched in 2024 with a promise to disrupt Japan’s movie industry and offer a better working environment for creators. In particular, K2 proposes an alternative to the ubiquitous “production committee” system, frequently criticized for its tendency toward conservatism and blandness.
