There can be no doubt. After last weekend’s landslide victory, Sanae Takaichi commands the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Whatever questions may have existed about her ability to lead the LDP and the nation have been dispelled. Politicians and pundits alike now anticipate that she will preside over a long-term administration, providing Japan with much-needed stability.

The key questions are what she will do with that mandate. While many will counsel aggressive pursuit of her agenda, the more responsible path, wiser and better for the nation, is one that is pragmatic, measured and maintains public support as the prime minister proceeds.

The LDP went into last week’s snap election expected to win. Most polls anticipated the party would secure enough seats to govern by itself. The biggest question hanging over the ballot was whether inclement weather might discourage voters from casting ballots, especially when the outcome was thought to be certain.
