One by one, Japan’s top skaters rose to the occasion in the women’s short program Tuesday at the Milano Cortina Games, setting up a tense battle for spots on the podium later this week.

In what was her penultimate skate at the Olympics, Kaori Sakamoto soaked it all in as she lit up the crowd at Milano Ice Skating Arena.

Performing to “Time to Say Goodbye” by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman, Sakamoto avoided any major mistakes and was rewarded with 77.23 points, slotting second behind her 17-year-old teammate Ami Nakai and putting herself in a perfect position to compete for a first Olympic gold medal Thursday.
